Patent – Solar Reflector
Technical details

60 SQM parabolic reflector designed with space frame structural engineering that gives static focus of high temperature. Direct super heated steam generation without any heat transfer fluids.

  • First time in the world 60 SQM parabolic reflector designed with space frame structural engineering that gives static focus of high temperature. In other designs like parabolic trough and moving focus paraboloide dish it is realized that collecting the generated thermal energy with flexible hoses and joints leads to high investment as well as operation and maintenance.
  • Due to static focus , First time in the world it is possible to incorporate thermal storage at focus that avoids heat transfer fluids like thermic fluid and molten salt etc. this results in low maintenance and lower pumping loads.
  • The innovative static cast iron cavity receiver is directly placed at the focus that is providing 24 hours heat storage is First time in the world of its kind.
  • In India, it is realized that the stand alone power plants with 24 hours supply is most suitable as the national grid is fragile so the core development is to provide 24 hours power supply with high temperature storage that can discharge energy as and when required.
  • Due to point focus, First time in the world the solar reflector generates super heated steam directly (from 300-400 degC) that leads to higher turbine efficiency.
  • 100% automization of the reflector for daily tracking of the sun, for seasonal tracking and for seasonal change adjustments through optical camera based tracking mechanism.
  • Direct super heated steam generation without any heat transfer fluids (like thermic fluids, molten salt) or any heat exchangers.

Introduced innovative and cost effective design in order to facilitate localized fabrication.

“Special features  like  remote  monitoring and instrumentation for web enabled performance evaluation in real time for easy maintenance”

  • Introduced the central bar space frame design within the parabolic reflector with three actuators to minimize the steel usage per sqm of reflector (parabolic dish) to change the orientation of the address the challenge of stretching and sqeezing the horizontal dimension of the reflector for seasonal adjustments.
  • As the parabolic reflector gives a static focus, receiver can be mounted on ground at a fixed location. This helps in reducing structural complexities and avoids flexible joints.
  • Design of receiver that has coiled pipe of 20mm ID that is fully embedded in the outer wall of the receiver, the 3900 kg mass of the cast iron receiver acts as a thermal storage medium and thus enables an improved heat transfer to the embedded coil.
  • Introduced innovative and cost effective design in order to facilitate localized fabrication.
  • Network enabled dual axis tracking, with remote access and monitoring for effective and easy maintenance
  • Special features  like  remote  monitoring and instrumentation for web enabled performance evaluation in real time for easy maintenance

Our Research team has found:

  • Continuous breakthrough improvements in the concentrated parabolic reflectors with different modules to generate both low temperature/pressure and high temperature/pressure steam for various applications like cooking, sterilization, laundry and power generation.
  • Breakthrough in the thermal storage design with 24 hours storage capacity that has low complexity in both manufacturing and operation and less maintenance.
  • Dual axis tracking system that is robust, cost effective and less maintenance.
