Awareness Cum Training Center on

Concentrating Solar Thermal Technologies

  • From 2014 to 2017, World Renewal Spiritual Trust (WRST) was awarded with an assignment of Awareness Cum Training Centre on Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST) Technologies under United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) assisted Concentrated Solar Heat Project of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. The CST Center was located at “India One” Solar Thermal Power Plant in Abu Road, Rajasthan.
  • The objective of the assignment was two-fold. One was to create awareness among various groups of stakeholders from industries, institutions & commercial establishments with the aim to generate proposals for installations of CST based systems at their establishments. To facilitate that purpose, CST Center in Abu organized CST Awareness Seminars for interested end users and entrepreneurs with live demonstration of CST technologies. During the 2 day seminar program, participants were able to explore and deepen their knowledge on available CST technologies and their applications with the support of practical case studies; they learnt how to determine the best system design for their requirements and got acquainted with the relevant MNRE, UNDP-GEF policies and support. The CST Center was inaugurated in December 2014, when the first Awareness Seminar on Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST) Technologies took place. In total nine Awareness Seminars were conducted by the CST Center: in December 2014, September 2015, November 2015, February 2016, October 2016, two in November 2017, January 2017 and February 2017.
  • Secondly, the CST Center aimed also at supporting the capacity building of CST manufacturers and entrepreneurs in the area of CST quality especially in the field of mirror reliability, durability, performance improvements, manufacturing skills, customization of end user products / systems etc. To facilitate that purpose, CST Center in Abu organized CST Technology Trainings for manufacturers and entrepreneurs with the live demonstration of CST technologies. During the 3 day training program, participants were able to explore and gain practical experience on 16 SQM Scheffler paraboloid reflector – its concept, design, fabrication and installations aspects. Training was a fusion of theoretical and practical field activities. Sessions were conducted by experts having long time association and practical experience with Scheffler elliptical dishes. In total, six CST Technology Trainings were conducted by the CST Center: in April 2015, August 2015, October 2015, April 2016, December 2016 and March 2017.
  • As proven by programs conducted, CST Seminars and Trainings created an excellent platform for networking and relationship building within the CST field in India.

Residential Workshop for Senior Officials of SNAs &

other Government Departments on

Concentrating Solar Thermal Technologies

CST Center co-organized, together with UNDP-GEF CSH Project of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), a 2 Day Residential Workshop for Senior Officials of SNAs & other Government Departments that was held at Mount Abu during 8-9 October, 2015, hosting 37 participants.

Technical sessions were chaired by Dr R.P. Goswami, Director at MNRE, Solar Thermal Group; Dr A.K. Singhal National Project Manager of UNDP-GEF assisted CSH Project of MNRE; Sh. Bhanu Pratap Singh, CEO of Himachal Pradesh Energy Development Agency (Himurja) and Mr S.K. Singh, Director of National Institute of Solar Energy, MNRE. 13 states were represented by senior officials from respective SNAs and other government bodies. All states shared their current status of CST developments, as well as challenges and plans for the future. Key actions were defined and will be followed up by the identified bodies.

There were also delegates from Ramakrishna Mission Students Home (Chennai) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (Jaipur) present at the gathering. They shared end user requirements and challenges on institutional cooking and currently used CST based systems.  The challenges were addressed later on by a WRST expert presentation on direct solar cooking with the new concept of a fixed focus paraboloid dish with receiver cum heat storage with cooking surface.  4 manufacturers of various CST based systems were present at the workshop. They all shared the salient features of their respective solutions, together with case studies.

In between programs, many people approach and visit the CST Awareness Cum Training Center on regular basis. CST Technology Demonstration units serve greatly in creating awareness and understanding, which is essential in the decision making process for the entrepreneurs, institutional users and other potential beneficiaries.
